When we hit this time of year Van Morrison’s lyrics always spring to mind,
“Well, it’s a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
‘Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I’m trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low”
With Autumn time looming it’s always a good time to reflect on the year so far. The flurry of Summer festivals not only provided me with some great gigs but also the chance to get to see some of my fellow blues guys out there first hand.
The blues is alive and kicking in Britain at the moment with so many good artists out there doing their own interpretations of the blues. One thing I’ve noticed over the time I have been playing is that the standard of musicianship, technique and professionalism has improved so much. Simultaneously the live sound has improved too with good quality sound systems and equipment, much better than the old days of deafening distortion!
If you are new to the blues or want to find out more about the British blues scene then a good place to start would be the British Blues awards who had their presentation at the recent Newark blues festival last month. Check out not just the winners but all the nominees too and I’m sure you will find something you like. Then, go a step further and go see them live and buy their albums, we are all independent artists and struggle for our art to make ends meet so your support is always appreciated. Who knows maybe one day I may be a nominee too!
